CISDI innovation boosts cast quality

CISDI has successfully tested a unique new modification to reduce problems during multi-ladle casting.

The technological innovation, a permeable side, is designed to achieve a safer manufacturing process and a higher-quality product.

If a traditional sliding mechanism for the refining ladle cannot be tightly closed for multi-ladle casting, resulting low temperatures at the bottom of the slide can cause solidification of the liquid steel and prevention of the next casting from commencing.

This problem was occurring at a plant CISDI had been called on to assist. Only a common ladle could be used for multi-ladle casting at the site. However, the liquid steel in a common ladle is of a lower grade than that in a refining and vacuum-treated ladle.

To improve the cast quality and solve these problems, CISDI proposed a modification of the refining ladle’s sliding mechanism.

Its research and engineering team made adaptive modifications on the out-sourced permeable slide’s air piping.

Multiple no-load permeability tests were conducted and an appropriate casting process was designed. The casting is now set for 5 to 200 heats.

The team also trained the operators in the technical details.
